Varicella (Chicken Pox)
  • Crops of macules that become papules, then vesicles that evolve into crusted pustules. Lesions are present in all stages of evolution
  • Lesions most prominent on the trunk; head, extremities, and mucous membranes also involved
  • Eruption is pruritic
  • Rash occurs after a prodrome of chills, fever, malaise, headache, sore throat and dry cough
  • Tzanck smear taken from the base of a vesicle shows characteristic multinucleate giant cells
