Metastasis to the Skin
  • Firm to hard flesh colored, red or blue nodules
  • The trunk and scalp are the most frequent sites of metastatic carcinoma
  • The source of cutaneous metastasis mirrors the frequency of tumors in the general population. A study in 1972 showed the following frequency of tumor metastasis.

MEN: Lung, Colon, Melanoma, Oral cavity, Kidney, Stomach

WOMEN: Breast, Colon, Lung, Melanoma, Ovary, Kidney

  • Over the past decade there has been a dramatic increase in lung cancer in women and this tumor probably accounts for a higher percentage of skin metastases
  • Histology: Within the dermis there is a proliferation of tumor cells often in a nodular configuration with central tumor necrosis.
