Erythema Multiforme
  • Erythematous papules and plaques; target (bulls eye) lesion is diagnostic
  • Lesions are typically on extremities and are symmetrical
  • Mucous membranes (eyes and mouth) may be involved (erythema Multiforme major)
  • Immunologic reaction triggered by circulating immune complexes
  • Drugs (penicillin, barbiturates, phenytoin, sulfonamides) and infection (herpes simplex, Mycoplasma pneumoniae) most common etiologic agents implicated
  • Histology: Dyskeratotic keratinocytes in the epidermis, vacuolization along the basement membrane, and a mild superficial perivascular infiltrate of mononuclear cells
