| Cells infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) may show nuclear changes (here multinuleation) as well as an area of clearing around the nuclei. Such cells are called koilocytes and indicate infection by a potentially oncogenic virus. Inflammation and glycogen accumulation may also cause perinuclear clearing. |
