Papanicolaou Test - Benign (Cytology)
Endocervical cells all touch the basement membrane and extend their cytoplasm in a columnar fashion. The presence of these cells in a Papanicolaou test specimen confirms to the cytologist that the endocervical cancal was sampled, and there is a good chance that cells between squamous and columnar mucosa were also retrieved.
